    Water is an essential requirement for human survival and the provision of safe drinking water is of particular importance to individual travellers, Emergency Relief and Aid personnel. Under operational conditions personnel will largely be available water sources in the field. Water is a heavy, bulky item to transport any distance so that the availability of effective on-site treatment of water is therefore essential and can be a major factor in the success or failure of operation. Purification on naturally occuring water sources requires both filtration and disinfection. Filtration is necessary to remove organic matter that will otherwise reduce the efficiency of subsequent disinfection and to clean the water and odour. Disinfection to eliminate pathogenic organisms (bacteria, viruses and cysts) is essential to provide water which is safe for human consumption. The effectiveness of Pre-Mac water purifiers has been proven in extensive tests and military field trials. They are in service with Aid and Charity Organisations, International Rescue and Emergency Response Teams, as well as Armed Forces throughout the world. Pre-Mac water purifiers are classified within the unit (model SWP) is designed to meet specific requirement for treatment of water in emergency or survival conditions. Using the proven filtration and sterilisation system of Pre-Mac's highly successful PWP, this unit will pntaminated sources. The size and weight have been kept to a minimum for inclusion in emergency ration packs. In operation the source water is initially filtered, cleaning the water as well as chemical contamination. This is followed bye-resin complex which acts as a contact microbiocide but also releases a low level of iodine into the water for secondary disinfection. Secondary disinfection occurs during the recommended holding period. The SWP is convenient to uwill not block due to its high filtration capability and in-built pump.The rated capacity of SWP is 50 litres, at which point it should be discarded. The effectiveness of SWP has been proven in tests carried out by the London SchMedicine. In these tests total elimination of the bacteria Escherichia coli at 108.4 per litre was recorded whilst reductions of Poliovirus in excess of 99.9%, with a holding time of 2 minutes, were recorded. This effectiveness maintainement a capacity of 50 litres. Tests carried out by the RAF Institue of Pathology and Tropical Medicine complete effectiveness against different genera of bacteria. This effectiveness was also shown to be maintained at twice the nomitill effective after treating with 100 litres of water.
